This week has been interesting. Right now I am sitting next to Jackson on the couch as he is recovering from his herniated belly-button surgery. Thanks to Jordan (and his family) for the card and the game. Jacks was real brave, and is doing okay. He is bored, wants to get up and move, play outside, all the normal stuff.
The other night he asked me if Santa was like Jesus, because they could both know if you were being good or bad. I asked him some questions about santa, like "How do you think he knows if we are good or bad, and how do you think he visits everyones house in one night?" I was interested in his answer to these questions, Jackson being the logical math kid that he is. He wasn't too sure about how it all happened. I told him that santa had lots of helpers, but that didn't seem to satisfy him. Then came the big Oops! I told him santa wasn't real, and tried to explain why we give gifts at Christmas, and that what santa stood for as a symbol of giving was a good thing. Didn't exactly work out. He got a little upset, angry, and went on to tell his younger sisters that santa wasn't real. They didn't buy it. Jess heard the commotion upstairs and had a talk with Jack. Then she had a talk with me, oops.
The whole thing was forgotten later that night, but I did a little research on the background of the santa tradition. It turns out that he was an actual person, St. Nicholas. He lived in Turkey and died around 350 A.D. He was known for being a friend of the children, and also for random gifts of gold to those in need. So St. Nicholas (santa) is real, just not still living in the flesh. I found that quite interesting, I obviously had never known that before.
So, the other night when I was tucking Jackson in I told him that St. Nicholas (santa) was real, and that he lived 1500 years or so ago, and that people today call him Santa Claus. He just gave me a so what look, and said very matter of factly, "I still think he is real." So from now on I am going to keep my mouth shut.

Oh no! Hahaha, thaat's such a funny story! I just told Luke that Santa wasn't real, too, but I don't think he even knew about Santa yet. He won't remember anyway. We hope Jackson can make a quick recovery. I remember when Dad has his double hernia surgery about 18 years ago... he was miserable! But I'll bet Jackson will have a better time than full-grown dad.
There's just something magic about believing in Santa Claus. And that's what Christmas is about to children: magic.
Glad to know Jackson's recovering well.
The whole Santa thing is interesting. Jordan was always afraid of him, when he was about 2 he said, "Could Santa just leave my stuff out on the lawn? Because I don't want him in the house." It wasn't long after that before he quite obviously didn't believe at all. Jemma, on the other hand, she didn't seem to buy the whole Santa thing, but now she does. I think we'll just let her figure it out herself.
